Before & After Headshot - Jessica Shearer

To make a good headshot, you need a good expression. You can be the cutest most unique person in the world but if you don't have a good expression you won't get called for an audition. Acting is expressing! Take Jessica Shearer, a local DC actress. She's actually traveled quite a bit, but has been in DC for a while. Her old headshot was shot in Houston, TX. And while an interesting shot, it's just not doing her justice. Her expression is very surprised! She actually looks a little shocked at the photographer. Her eyebrows naturally raise when smiling or laughing, which is normal, but actors need to learn to control their faces when getting a headshot. Also, with the way her hair is styled, it emphasizes her eyebrow, so it's better to part on the other side. If you don't have a good photographer coaching you into a shot you can't really understand what is happening. It's like acting without a director.
